Mitchell Johnson finds his fit with SQDAthletica

Former Australian cricketer, Mitchell Johnson is trading in his baggy green for activewear, after signing on as an ambassador for Australian owned men’s athletic wear brand SQDAthletica.

One of the nation’s most fearsome and successful fast bowlers, Mitchell will front SQDAthletica’s Fit For… campaign which aims to encourage Aussie men to find the balance between family, work, mates and keeping active and healthy.

“Fit For...for me is about having the energy I need to live a balanced lifestyle between sport and keeping active, work and raising a family,” said Mitchell. “SQDAthletica’s clothing, particularly the quality appealed to me straight away, but it’s what the brand stood for that really appealed. The idea of being part of a squad and finding balance. It fits well for me.”

Retiring from international cricket in 2015 and from all forms of cricket earlier this year, Mitchell now splits his time between cricket commentating, speaking opportunities and most importantly, raising his two young children with his wife Jessica.

“I was very happy to move on,” Mitchell said on his decision to retire. “It adds up when you’re training at full intensity and I’d been playing since I was 18 years old. Now with a young family, it was important for me to be around to spend quality time with them and help share the workload with my wife Jess.”

Despite having no regrets about retiring, Mitchell admits he did initially struggle to let go of the fast-paced lifestyle that came with being an elite athlete.

“It takes time to adjust,” he said. “The free time was the biggest challenge. I struggled with that a little bit – not having a purpose for every day. Now I’m more used to it and I like being open to opportunities where I can push myself out of my comfort zone. It’s just about getting the balance right more than anything – not to overload, but to do enough to keep myself busy.”

One aspect of Mitchell’s former sporting life that has transferred with him into retirement is his need to keep active, although not at the same level as when he was playing in test matches.

“Training’s actually one thing I don’t miss. It was full on - very intense,” he said. “After playing at an elite level though, I think my body will shut down if I stop completely so it’s important that I keep active. I like to go to the gym to clear my head. It gets me in a good space.”

It’s his passion for keeping fit that drew him to SQDAthletica, a brand that was established in Queensland in 2016 with the goal of inspiring men to get fit for life.

“We’re excited to have Mitch on board,” said Scott Philipson, General Manager of SQDAthletica. “He’s a great fit for our brand, which is all about helping men connect with each other, to find a bit of balance in their lives, and keep active in whatever way they choose.”
